Former Turkish president withdraws from election race under threat

Turkey’s former President Abdullah Gul, founder of the ruling AKA party, suddenly withdrew Saturday from the election called by President Tayyip Erdogan for June 24. Gul was to have led a new party bloc for challenging Erdogan’s expanding authority at the polls but announced that conditions were not favorable for establishing a new political entity. DEBKAfile: What Gul did not reveal was that Erdogan’s senior adviser, Ibrahim Kalin and the chief of staff paid him a surprise visit last week and cautioned him not to try and run against the president.

Democracy is like a train when you reach your destination you get off. Erdogan was quoted as saying this. This election is a sham to give legitimacy to his autocratic rule nothing more.
