France’s $15bn loan offer to Tehran is subject to US nod
France’s proposed $15bn credit to Iran, to dissuade Tehran from taking the next step for ditching its commitments to the 2015 nuclear accord, needs permission from Washington. The French are not offering the amount in dollars or euros but from Iranian accounts frozen by sanctions in international banks. The money’s release would expose the banks to US penalties and is therefore contingent on Trump administration waivers. If they are granted, President Emmanuel Macron will move on with the next part of his plan which is to arrange a summit between the US and Iranian presidents. An Iranian delegation is standing by in Paris awaiting results
