Romain Franck, a French citizen employed at France’s Jerusalem consulate, is accused of smuggling 70 pistols and 2 machine guns from the Gaza Strip to Judea and Samaria in recent months, as part of a Palestinian arms smuggling ring just busted by the Shin Bet and the Israeli police. They announced Monday that the Frenchman is accused of using a vehicle registered to the consulate for transporting the smuggled weapons through the Erez checkpoint on five different occasions. He picked the contraband up from a Palestinian employed at the French Culture Center in Gaza and delivered it to a West Bank Palestinian who sold it on to arms dealers. Nine suspects have been rounded up and are in police custody; six of them have been indicted. Among them is a Jerusalem Arab resident employed as a security guard at the French consulate.
