Germany closes schools in hard lockdown

Reporting another 952 deaths and 27,728 cases on Wednesday, Germany closed schools and non-essential businesses until Jan. 10, a death blow for stores which depend on Christmas shopping. On the day itself, each household may host up to  four close family members. Other European countries have tightened restrictions ahead of Christmas, France imposing a night curfew.
