Giuliani bows out, Romney favored in US secretary of state sweepstakes
Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced on Friday that he has withdrawn from consideration for secretary of state or any other cabinet post in the administration of President-elect Donald Trump. He said in a statement that “This is not about me; it is about what is best for the country and the new administration“.
Giuliani’s withdrawal makes Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts and the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, the leading contender to become Washington’s top diplomat. Meanwhile, reports said Friday that Trump has selected Gary Cohn, president of Goldman Sachs, as chairman of the National Economic Council, the president’s main economic advisor.
