Gunmen Wednesday opened fire on the car of a senior military commander in Egypt's in Sinai, Maj-Gen Ahmad Wasfi, a day after two people died in an attack by militants on a security checkpoint.
The car of the Second Army chief "came under heavy fire, which led to clashes between security forces and terrorist elements," a spokesman said. DEBKAfile: The general moved to El Arish earlier this week to establish a command center for an offensive against Islamist terrorists roaming free in Sinai.
