Hamas leader Haniyeh in Cairo to discuss fighting former ally ISIS
Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas prime minister of the Gaza Strip, is meeting Egyptian security and political officials in Cairo Tuesday to discuss combined action against ISIS. He arrived with a large delegation from Doha, Qatar. In recent months, Hamas has stopped playing ball with ISIS networks in Sinai, cracking down instead on extremist Salafist elements and arresting ISIS supporters in the Gaza Strip. For years, the Palestinian Hamas was accused by Egypt of supplying the Sinai Islamists with weapons for terrorist attacks, complicity in those attacks on Egyptian forces in the Sinai town of El Arish, and abetting the assassination of Egypt’s prosecutor general Hisham Barakat by the Muslim Brotherhood in June 2015.
