Hamas No. 2 officer asks Nasrallah to resolve quarrel with Assad
Saleh Arouri, Hamas’ director of terror operations, had his third meeting Tuesday with Hizballah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
DEBKAfile: Arouri, who also leads the Palestinian reconciliation talks in Cairo, asked Nasrallah to set up a meeting with Bashar Assad to bury the hatchet between Hamas leaders and the Syrian ruler. Arouri arranged for the conversation with Nasrallah to take place on the eve of the transfer of Gaza border crossings to the Palestinian Authority early Wednesday. This was a signal that its cooperation in the Egyptian peacemaking effort in no way prejudiced Hamas’ ties with Iran and Hizballah, or their common goal of “resistance” to the Jewish state up until its destruction. Nasrallah was appointed by Tehran to keep an eye on Hamas and ascertain that its commitment to this cause under Iran’s lead remained firm.
