A major general will head the new Iran Command to be set up under the multi-year plan announced on Thursday by IDF chief Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi. It will focus on analyzing threats posed by Iran and charting counter-campaigns. The coming year will also see a new infantry division and the closing-down of one tank battalion and one air force squadron. Kochavi stressed the focus in the coming years will be on sharpening Israel’s military edge in the region and intensifying operational integration among the various military arms.
Approved by the defense minister and prime minister, the new IDF plan will be presented to the cabinet for approval. It is designed to bolster the IDF’s offensive capabilities, including technology for air force missions to destroy enemy targets, harness more satellite support for intelligence gathering and enhance Israel’s cyber capacity.
