India launches world’s largest covid vaccination program
The first shots of the world’s largest vaccination program will be given on Saturday to India’s 30 million doctors, nurses and other health workers, followed by 270 million people aged over 50 or made vulnerable by illness to covid-19 infection. Flown into major cities, this round inoculates one-fifth of India’s 1.3 billion population – either with the British AstraZeneca, manufactured domestically under the brand name Covishield, or covaxin, a vaccine developed by Indian researchers. India manufactures about 60pc of all vaccines sold globally. More than 10.5 million coronavirus cases are currently reported in India and more than 151,000 deaths were registered since the virus erupted.. Saturday saw the worldwide coronavirus death toll pass two million.
