Iran’s largest warship catches fire and sinks near Hormuz

The Kharg, the Iranian Navy’s largest warship, caught fire and sank on Wednesday off the Iranian port of Jask near the Strait of Hormuz. Western intelligence sources report that a fire in the engine room caused one of the ship’s boilers to explode. The crew of 400 were evacuated in time before the ship sank.

The Kharg, defined by the Iranians as a training ship, is capable of replenishing other ships at sea, lift heavy cargo and serve as a launch paid for helicopters.
