Iran’s lawmakers scrap subsidies for millions of citizens; unrest expected

The Iranian parliament on Wednesday passed a bill cancelling the cash subsidies provided to about 24 million citizens, despite President Hassan Rouhani's opposition to the move. The cancellation of the subsidies that a significant portion of the population uses as supplementary income is expected to spark unrest throughout the country, especially in non-urban areas.
