Iraqi forces retake Ramadi government compound
In May, the Sunni Arab city of Ramadi 90 km west of Baghdad fell to the Islamic State in May, symbolizing one of the Iraqi army’s most humiliating defeats in the face of Islamic State. Sunday, Iraqi forces drove through toe the former government complex and announced it was under complete control. They found the compound empty of ISIS fighters and declared a much needed victory. DEBKAfile: ISIS decided that its 500-600 fighters were no match for 10,000 Iraqi troops in a head-on battle and therefore, according to Western military sources retreated to the southwestern suburbs of Ramadi to launch guerrilla warfare from there.
