Iraqi Shiite supporters break into US embassy compound in Baghdad

An angry mob of Iraqi Shiite militia supporters broke into the US embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday after smashing a door and setting fire to the reception area near the parking lot.  Reporters saw flames rising from the compound and heard gunfire. At least three US soldiers were posted on the roof of the main building with guns. A man on a loudspeaker urged to mob not to enter the compound. The protesters who came from a funeral for the 25 Kataib Hezballah fighters who were killed in a US air strike on Sunday. Outside the building, they set fire to the three trailers used by security guards. No one was reportedly hurt in the rampage. The ambassador and senior staff were evacuated earlier. Hours after the outbreak 30 Iraqi soldiers arrived in armored vehicles and used tear gas against the rioters. Some 20 protesters were affected.
