Iraqi PM Abadi in Mosul to congratulate troops on liberation of Mosul
Wearing military uniform, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived here in Mosul on Sunday to congratulate Iraq’s armed forces on their victory over the Islamic State. While troops were still mopping up last pockets of resistance, they marked the formal end of the bloody US-led nine-month campaign that left Iraq’s second largest towns in ruins, thousands dead and nearly a million displaced from their homes.
ISIS sleeper cells and suicide bombers are still lurking in the ruins and explosive booby-traps remain to be cleared before civilians can return and services be restored.
