ISIS trashes Palmyra’s iconic Arch of Triumph
Syrian authorities report that Islamic State terrorists have blown up the monumental Arch of Triumph, centerpiece of the 1,800-year old Roman city, the latest outrage in their step-by-step demolition of priceless relics since they occupied the UNESCO heritage city of Palmyra in May. The archway's adornments were described as "an outstanding example of Palmyrene art." In August, the Islamists razed two important cultural buildings: the Temple of Bel and the Temple of Baalshamin, then beheaded the local director of antiquities.
