Islamists break thru Syrian rebel defense lines up to Turkish border
DEBKAfile military sources: Islamic State fighters continue their attack north of the big Syrian town of Aleppo and advance towards the Turkish border. They are moving along three axes, having put Mare’a with its 20,000 citizens to siege and entered the southern suburbs of Azaz. This action has essentially broken the back of the Syrian rebel defense force that was set up by Turkey and Syria in recent months.
ISIS now controls the entire area between Aleppo and the Turkish border, leaving the US special forces operating there more dependent than ever on the local Kurdish YPG.
