Israel’s coronavirus death tall passes 4,000

Due to diminished testing over the weekend, the number of new covid cases per day dropped to 5,616 on Sunday. However, an alarming 9.1pc tested positive. The highest figures were found in the ultra-orthodox neighborhoods and towns. During the night, five more deaths drove the total to 4,005. Some 1,130 serious patients with 273 on respirators are taxing the hospitals to their limit.

There appears to be no escape from a third week of lockdown after the two-week closure ends this coming Thursday, although its efficacy is questioned in view of the fact that the ultra-religious communities persist in keeping their education institutions open in breach of national guidelines.

Covid vaccinations Sunday began to encompass the 45 plus age group after the high priority categories were reached. Altogether, 152,000 shots were administered  – 72,000 with their first doses, and 80,000 with their second.
