Israel’s general election brought forward to April 9

The decision to call an early election on April 9 ahead of the scheduled date in November was reached by the government coalition party heads at a meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday. They issued an announcement saying, “I consideration of our budgetary and national responsibilities, the leaders of the coalition parties have unanimously decided to dissolve the Knesset and conduct parliamentary elections in early April after serving four full years in office. The coalition will continue to function in unison during the run-up to the vote.”
The Knesset is to dissolve itself next Wednesday. The government has been serving in the past weeks with an unstable majority of 61 (out of 120), which seriously curtailed its legislative capacity. The failure to carry the Military Mobilization Bill against opposition votes by the Jan. 15 deadline was the last straw.
