Israel’s High Court: Government may not hold terrorists’ bodies for bargaining

Following the latest clash between the government and the high court, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ordered the justice minister to prepare new legislation to overrule its latest decison. On Thursday, a high court majority decreed that the government must surrender the remains of dead terrorists to their families and is not permitted by law to hold them back for use in negotiations with the enemy. The court gave the government six months to draft new legislation. The ruling responded to a petition filed by families of Hamas activists killed while performing acts of terror. “We can’t afford to give them free gifts,” said Netanyahu. “Levers are essential for the war on terror.”
