Japanese PM Abe is resigning over ill health

After frequent hospital visits in recent weeks sparked speculation, Japan’s PM Shinto Abe is said to be about to resign. The departure of the country’s longest serving prime minister is generating political turmoil for lack of an obvious successor. Abe is known to suffer from a chronic inflammatory bowel disease which cut short his first term in 2007. Stocks tumbled in response to the news.
