Kerry arrives unannounced in Baghdad

Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Baghdad from Cairo Monday morning to meet Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Iraqi Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish leaders and urge them to bridge their sectarian differences and form a new, inclusive government. He arrived after the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) seized the main border crossing to Jordan, prompting the mobilization of reserves for beefing up the kingdom’s border defenses.President Barack Obama warned Sunday night that ISIS could grow in power, destabilize the region and pose a threat to the US. But he is making substantial military aid to Baghdad contingent on Maliki forming a more representative government or stepping aside. ISIS meanwhile sweeps across Sunni Iraq and seizes control of its borders.
