Khamenei appoints Sadeq Amoli Larijani to chair Expediency Council

Sadegh Amoli Larijani, head of the Guardian Council, now takes over the top post of the powerful Expediency Council following the death of Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi, The Expediency Council resolves disputes between branches of government, while the Guardian Council vets legislation and election candidates in keeping with “Islamic Revolutionary” dictates. Larijani was personally sanctioned by the United States in January 2018 for “human rights abuses” and “supporting Iranian weapons programs.”
