Kuwait cancels Lebanese president’s visit under Saudi pressure

After Lebanese PM Hariri’s flight to Riyadh, the Saudis persuaded Kuwait to call off a visit by Lebanese President Michel Aoun scheduled to have begun Sunday. DEBKAfile: Riyadh wants to keep the Christian president under pressure to quit his political pact with Hizballah. The Saudis have launched a plan to turn Lebanese politics around for a new pact between Christians and Sunni Muslims versus Shiites and Iran. In pursuit of this plan, they have invited the prominent Lebanese Sunni leader Ashraf Rifai, from the northern town of Tripoli, who is a former justice minister and intelligence chief, to come to Riyadh for talks.
