Lavrov: We are watching Idlib and have Russian troops on the ground
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday: “Russia has military servicemen stationed on the ground in the Syrian region of Idlib,” adding: “Any attacks carried out by Islamist militant groups in the de-escalation zone would be forcefully suppressed.”
DEBKAfile: This comment is unusual, since Moscow rarely reveals where Russian troops are deployed or admits to maintaining ground troops in Syria. The “de-escalation zone” Lavrov refers too was set up with Turkey to avert a Syrian assault on Idlib. The latest outbreak in the province would indicate that this deal is a dead letter, and Moscow is opening the door for direct Russian military intervention in the fighting.
