Leading House Democrat Eliot Engel also against nuclear deal
New York Rep. Eliot Engel, the ranking Democrat of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced he will vote against the nuclear deal with Iran, joining New York Sen. Chuck Schumer. Both pointed to inadequacies in the provisions made in the accord for international inspections as giving Iran a large loophole to escape detection of its illicit nuclear activity. Engel also protested the fact that advanced conventional weapons and ballistic missiles were not on the table of the negotiations.
The two announcements are a double blow for the Obama administration. Schumer and Engel are influential enough to turn fellow Democrats around to join Republicans in overriding an Obama veto annulling a negative vote on the nuclear accord.
