Lebanese central bank prepares to close Hizballah accounts
Following the US imposition of economic sanctions on Hizballah, the central bank of Lebanon is preparing to comply with a US finance law and close accounts linked to the organization. Central bank governor Riad Salameh issued a statement in which he ordered banks subordinate to him "to consult with the central bank in Beirut before closing accounts suspected of being ones violating the American sanctions on the organization." He said "The U.S. law has to be implemented worldwide and in Lebanon", adding that "It is not possible to guarantee credit stability if (the central bank) does not implement the U.S. law."
