London police: At least six dead in catastrophic fire
London's Metropolitan Police said Wednesday afternoon that at least six people had died in the massive blaze at a tower block in the North Kensington section of the British capital, with the death toll expected to rise. More than 70 people have been hospitalized and a number of people remain unaccounted for. The fire broke out before 1:00am on the second floor and spread upward. As of the early afternoon, smoke continued to billow from the burning shell of the 24-story Grenfell Tower, which was built in 1974. The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
Danny Cotton, commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, said "In my 29 years of being a firefighter, I have never, ever seen anything of this scale."
