Malcolm Turnbull is Australia’s new prime minister
On Monday night, Australia’s center-right Liberal Party suddenly voted to remove Prime Minister Tony Abbott from the party leadership in favor of Malcolm Turnbull, a wealthy, former investment banker, who has served in parliament since 2004. For the last two years, Turnbull has served as Australia’s minister of communications. The vote, making Turnbull the country’s fourth prime minister since 2013, was the latest shock in Australia’s newly volatile politics.
