Merkel begins her fourth term as German chancellor

The Bundestag formally voted Wednesday (364 out of 692 members) to re-elect Angela Merkel, 63, for her fourth term as German Chancellor, after six months of agonizing negotiations to cobble together a coalition government. Germany’s Social Democrats’ consent to prolong their unpopular ruling coalition with Merkel’s conservatives, finally ended a period of political uncertainty unprecedented in the country’s recent history.
