Merkel reacts strongly to US monitoring of her mobile phone

In a fresh scandal over NSA’s eavesdropping activities against foreign leaders, leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel complained to President Barack Obama Wednesday about US spying on her mobile phone. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the chancellor was assured that the NSA “is not and will not” monitor her phone, but he did not deny such actions in the past.
Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said that she views such practices, if confirmed, as completely unacceptable. Among close partners like Germany and the US, “there must not be such surveillance of a head of government’s communications. That would be a serious breach of trust and such practices must be stopped immediately.”
