Moldovia arrests 7, expels 2, for pro-Russian subversion
Amid fears of a Russian coup plot, Moldova’s police arrested 7 people accused of fomenting unrest during protests Sunday against the pro-Western Sandu government. Two foreign agents suspected of complicity in the plot were expelled on Monday. The Moldovan government has long accused Moscow — which bases soldiers in the breakaway region of Transnistria to the east — of stirring unrest in the country, including protests in the capital Chișinău, as punishment for its path toward membership of the European Union. Last June, Brussels granted Moldova and Ukraine candidate status.
