Monster hurricane threatens three US states, a million evacuated

Three states, North and South Carolina and Virginia, are under threat of the monster Florence hurricane making landfall on Friday. More than a million residents were told to evacuate from the coastline, internal flights were cancelled, ports closed and schools and factories shuttered. “This storm is a monster,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said. “Even if you’ve ridden out storms before, this one is different. Don’t bet your life on riding out a monster.” Packing maximum winds of 225 km per hour, the storm, ranked as a Category 4 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, was expected to grow stronger and larger over the next few days, with torrential rain and severe flooding
