More than 90 US army men in S. Turkey to set up Syria safe zone

Around 90 American troops landed at the southern Turkish town of Tal-Abyad (distinct from the Syrian town of that name) on Monday. They are setting up a joint command center to coordinate and manage a new 32-kilometer safe zone in Syria’s embattled northeastern region along the Turkish border. DEBKAfile: This zone will be under US-Syrian military control. The safe zone is intended mainly to keep Turkish forces out of Kurdish-rule areas. Ankara will be allowed to send its military in to inspect the strip from time to time to ascertain that the Kurdish PKK has not established a presence there.
