N. Carolina governor calls in National Guard to quell rioting

Rioting in Charlotte, North Carolina continued for the second straight day following the fatal shooting of Keith Scott, a 43-year-old black man, by a black policeman. The police claimed that Scott was holding a handgun and did not heed the instructions of police on the scene. The rioting was sparked by a video posted on social networks in which a female relative claims that the victim was sitting in his car and reading a book at the time of the incident, and was not even armed. One demonstrator who was shot during the unrest is now hospitalized in critical condition. The police claim he was hit by gunfire from another demonstrator, not the police. North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency in Charlotte on Thursday and announced that he had called in the National Guard to help the police restore order. At least 16 policemen have been injured and there has been major damage to stores and police property in the city.
