Netanyahu, Pompeo in Brazil discuss cooperation post-US pullout from Syria

When they met in Brazil on Tuesday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu conveyed his appreciation to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his and President Donald Trump’s support for Israel’s efforts of self-defense against Syria and Hizballah “just in the last few days.” He was referring to Israel’s air assault in Syria on Dec. 25.
Netanyahu told reporters before the meeting, “We’re going to discuss the questions following the decision, the American decisions on Syria, on how to intensify even further our intelligence and operations cooperation in Syria and elsewhere to block Iranian aggression in the Middle East, to roll it back.” Pompeo said the American commitment to Israel’s security is unchanged, despite the US pullout. “Our effort to counter Iranian aggression continues, and our commitment to… the protection of Israel continues, in the same way before that decision was made,” said the US secretary of state. Both are in Brazil for the swearing-on of President Jair Bolsonaro later Tuesday.
