New CIA ‘mission center’ to tackle NKorean missile, nuke threats
CIA Director Mike Pompeo announced Wednesday the establishment of a "mission center" that will concentrate the US intelligence community's efforts to more effectively deal with North Korea's ballistic missile and nuclear programs. The center will "harness the full resources, capabilities, and authorities" of the agency, with experienced officers from across the CIA bringing "their expertise and creativity to bear against the North Korea target", the statement on the agency's website said. The center is to be headed by a veteran officer who will report directly to the agency's director.
DEBKAfile: The establishment of the center represents a major shift in the way that the US intelligence community deals with Pyongyang. Unlike the previous division of responsibilities between various departments and units, the center combines the CIA's various capabilities — including technology, intelligence and surveillance, linguistic specialization and familiarity with the area — under one roof. This will save a great amount of resources and facilitate quicker and more effective responses to developments.
