New US sanctions on Iran expected as Friday nuclear deal deadline approaches

“I am expecting more sanctions on Iran,” US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters at the White House Thursday night, ahead of President Donald Trump’s Friday deadline for a decision on extending waivers on the sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. Mnuchin indicated that Trump would accompany the waiver with new targeted sanctions on Iranian entities and individuals for involvement in Iran’s missile program, supporting terrorism and human rights abuses.
