New York elects Democratic mayor
Bill de Blasio, former Hillary Clinton campaign manager, is New York’s first Democratic mayor in 20 years after the reigns of Mayors Michael Bloomberg and Rudolph Giuliani, having beaten Republican Joe Lhota – according to partial results. In New Jersey, incumbent Republican Governor Chris Christie easily swept to a new term against his Democratic rival State Senator Barbara Buono. Christie’s popularity makes him a leading contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. In Virginia, Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe barely edged to victory against Republican Ken Cuccinelli, the Virginia attorney general, held back by the embarrassments of the Obamacare roll-out.
