No sign Merkel convinced Trump to stay in nuclear deal with Iran

In the talks Chancellor Angela Merkel held with President Donald Trump at the White House Friday, there is no sign that she changed Trump’s mind about opting out of the nuclear deal with Iran on May 12 – any more than French President Emmanuel Macron succeeded earlier this week. At his joint news conference with Merkel, Trump declared: “Iran will not do a nuclear weapon. Bank on it!” He said that the “murderous regime” in Tehran must not be allowed “to profit from our success in eradicating ISIS.” Asked if he would attend the US embassy inauguration in Jerusalem on May 14, he said “I may go.”  On the prospects of his historic summit with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the president commented: “My predecessors should have resolved the problem and not left it for me. They let themselves be played like a fiddle. That won’t happen now.”
