No tsunami, but tremors rattle Indonesia following undersea quake
A powerful earthquake that was initially measured 8.1 on the Richter scale struck Wednesday evening (local time) off the southwestern coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island. Officials in the Southeast Asian country issued a tsunami warning, but no tsunami took place and the warning was cancelled within several hours. There were no reports of casualties or damage. The US Geological Survey later revised the magnitude to 7.8. Aftershocks continued to rattle Indonesia on Thursday.
