Obama calls Netanyahu, upholds Israel’s right to self-defense
US President Barack called Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu early Friday. He said Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas rockets. He also “expressed concern about the risk of further escalation and emphasized the need for all sides to do everything they can to protect the lives of civilians and restore calm," the White House said in a statement. "The United States remains prepared to facilitate a cessation of hostilities, including a return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement," Obama said. DEBKAfile: That agreement was brokered by the US, Egypt and Qatar. Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi would never support an accord brokered by his arch-enemy the Muslim Brotherhood president Muhamed Morsi.
