Obama vetoes bill for 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia
President Barack Obama Friday night vetoed unanimous House and Senate legislation to waive sovereign immunity protections for Saudi Arabia and allow victims of the Sept. 11 attacks or their relatives to sue the Saudi government for allegedly helping at least some of the 19 hijackers who carried out those attacks. Fifteen of the attackers were Saudi nationals.
If two-thirds of the two chambers vote to override the president’s veto next week, as is threatened, this would be the first time it has happened during Obama’s two terms in office.
