Obama warns Russia against “doubling down” on support for Assad

"The strategy they're pursuing right now of doubling down on Assad is a mistake," Barack Obama said, during a town hall with US military personnel marking the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 Al Qaeda attack on America. This was a warning against the ongoing buildup of Russian military equipment and personnel in Syria and its effort to prop up the embossed Syrian leader. DEBKAfile: The Obama warning was fairly mild in the circumstances and hardly likely to deter Vladimir Putin. The US president did not mention the corresponding Iranian buildup of elite Guards troops in Syria.
