In reference to the Khashoggi affair, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked by reporters Tuesday whether placing US interests first means that US corporate interests override human rights. He replied: The Middle East is a dangerous place. America needs strong allies there for the protection of all its citizens, including those working in the region, and Saudi Arabia is one of those allies.
On Saturday, President Donald Trump said: “We may never know all of the facts surrounding” Khashoggi’s death, but “our relationship is with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” He told reporters that a “very full report” will be coming by Tuesday, while reiterating that the US “stands with Saudi Arabia” over the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Relations with the kingdom are important for safeguarding the interests of the United States and Israel, the president stressed.
