Overwhelming majority supports raising Palestinian flag over UN

The UN General Assembly voted overwhelminglyThursday in favor of a motion allowing the Palestinian flag to be flown in front of UN buildings. It was carried by 119 votes, with Israel and the US among the eight countries that voted against. The motion called for the flags of non-member observer states like the Palestinian territories to follow the flags of member states outside UN offices. It also allowed the Vatican flag to be raised. Forty-five nations abstained from the vote, including the UK and many other members of the European Union.

France, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia were among the EU states that voted in favor.
