Pentagon says US attack in Syria was “self-defense”

“Our forces have the inherent right of self-defense,” said US Defense spokesperson Dana White after US forces conducted air and artillery strikes against pro-Syrian forces, to repel their attack on a US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces base on Wednesday. Coalition forces were at the base when it was attacked, she said, adding, “We are not looking for a conflict with the [Syrian] regime.” White disclosed that US commanders had notified Russian counterparts of the air and ground assault on the pro-Syrian fighters, who were operating east of the Euphrates River deconfliction line in Deir al-Zour Province.  She declined to say whether there were any Russian soldiers or mercenaries among the dozens killed in the attack. Read DEBKAfile Special Report on this event.
