Poland mulls boycotting Visegrad summit after Katz comment
The Visegrad conference taking place on Monday and Tuesday is hosted by Israel. Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are represented by their respective prime ministers, but the fourth, Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki, had decided to send his foreign minister as mark of disfavor with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s comment at the Warsaw summit about Polish culpability in the Nazi Holocaust, which was later amended. However, on Sunday night, Yisrael Katz, just named acting foreign minister, quoted the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir as saying that “…every Pole sucked anti-Semitism with his mother’s milk. Nobody will tell us how to express our stance and how to honor the dead.” The Polish Prime Minister’s Office released a statement calling Katz’s comments “shameful.” Poland is considering withdrawing its participation in the summit pending a response from the Israeli government.

The very sad part about PM Binyamin Netanyahu’s and former PM Yitzhak Shamir ‘s comments (as quoted by Yisrael Katz), is that they are all too true as relates to the over whelming complicity of the Polish population to the Nazi Holocaust. Sure, there were Polish people who risked their lives (and those of their families) in saving Jewish people but unfortunately, they were the exception and not the rule. The shame lies with the Nazis and with the Polish (and French) collaborators, not with the Israeli Prime Ministers.
Complicity is not the right word. The nazi occupation wasn’t a picnic for non-jewish poles. Most were keeping their heads down trying to survive. If you brought attention to yourself you and your family were shot. Some poles were brave (or foolish or both), and some were scum and prayed on others’ misery.
It’s a case study in human nature. Every nation has some brave souls, and criminals. If they started rounding up Muslims in the US or Israel today, it would be the same story. Most people would worry about themselves.

The best that can be said is that when the Germans invaded, the Polish government left the Jews to their fate and were indifferent to it. Having said that, there were some Poles who, individually, showed great courage in rescuing Jews. The worst that can be said is that many Poles were more than happy for the Germans to solve the ‘Jewish Question’ for them.
