Powerful Nepal quake kills hundreds, triggers Everest avalanche
The 7.9 magnitude earthquake, the worst to hit the Nepal in 81 years, has killed at least 600 according to initial estimates which are risng fast. Chaotic scenes were reported at hospitals unable to cope with the thousands of injured lying outside. The Kathmandu Valley took the worst shocks. In the Nepalese capital, many homes and historic buildings were reduced to rubble and people are huddled outdoors. The epicenter was 80 km east of Nepal’s second largest town, Pokhara. Avalanches were reported on Mount Everest, sending mountaineers running for cover. Many people are trapped up the mountain. Helicopters are circling over outlying parts of the mountainous country to assess the damage.
There was also damage in neighboring Indian states and Bangladesh. Tremors were felt all the way to New Delhi. There are no reports yet Israeli casualties in Nepal which is a favorite Israeli tourist spot. Air and overland connections to Kathmandu are cut off.
