Prime Minister and Druze leader discuss violent clash over Golan wind turbines
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced concern to Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, the leader of the Druze community in Israel on Wednesday, as thousands of Israel Druzes clashed with police in protest against the construction of wind turbines on their farmland in the northern Golan. Their meeting was also attended by Shin Bet director Ronen Bar. Two protesters were taken to hospital after several police officers were injured by flying Molotov cocktails and rocks. Druze leaders complain of accumulating grievances over restrictions on building new housing and other forms of discrimination against their community. The sheikh proposed halting the turbine project to thrash out his community’s grievances in order to avert bloodshed.
